Dedicated PET's superior sensitivity and lesion detection (as small as 6-9mm), provides for early detection of tumor spread, even before cancer can be visualized with other modalities.
68 year-old male with lung cancer diagnosed October 2000 on CT of the chest and abdomen.
PET exam of November 2000 was performed to stage the patient. The PET scan confirmed lung cancer and showed liver lesions consistent with metastatic disease. These liver lesions were not visible on the October CT. A subsequent CT (November 28) confirmed the liver lesions initially discovered by PET. Thus, the PET scan correctly upstaged the patient.
